POLYCRONIA – Lecture @ Kunstuniversität Graz

Thu. May 28th, 9:45-11:15
KUG, E.21 Brandhofg. 21, 8010 Graz

The traditional operatic stage faces a systemic crisis: an aging demographic and a streaming economy that flattens art into passive background noise. This lecture introduces Polycronia, an opera cybera that bypasses the 19th-century lyrical stage entirely by existing as an independent web-app and a multi-linear narrative engine. Designed for composers, musicologists, and media artists, the session deconstructs a production workflow that integrates radical technical and philosophical concepts into a unified media collage.

Denovaire outlines the specific structural pillars of this digital-first approach. He details the application of 31-tone equal temperament (TET31) as a narrative device representing cosmic decay and entropy. He provides an inside look at the hybrid studio infrastructure, demonstrating how software like Nuendo 15, Vienna Ensemble Pro, and Vienna MIR can achieve orchestral grandeur from a home studio. The lecture also showcases custom modular synthesizer setups that physically control electric motors to excite acoustic percussion, bridging the digital-physical divide.

The compositional mechanics are paired with an exploration of Eastern philosophy. Denovaire breaks down Polycronia’s nonlinear dramaturgy, focusing on its Buddhist-inspired transhumanist narrative where an all-powerful AI governance network clashes with a synthetic entity that has achieved transcendence through physical, bodily experience. Finally, the lecture addresses the vocal challenges of this model, demonstrating how to engineer an open, improvisation-driven framework that unites classical operatic technique, jazz, and avant-garde vocal styles within the digital uncanny valley.

This masterclass features live app navigation, screen-recorded project sessions, and physical motor demonstrations. It is available for international conservatories and universities as an in-person session or an interactive Zoom lecture.
